2nd Grade Politics

I just read a newspaper article this morning talking about the nuances of how polling isn’t exactly going to reveal any potential race issues in the voting for or against Barack Obama in the upcoming election. The reasoning in the article went that even people prone to racist tendencies realize that there is a social stigma attached to being labeled a ‘racist’. They won’t tell a pollster that they are racist.Understandable. How then, can we discern people’s true feelings on the matter?

Well, an experience this morning on my school bus left me thinking that all we need to do to solve this polling problem is begin polling 2nd graders. A little guy got on my bus this morning and, being the talker that he is, began telling me how white people are so much nicer than black people. I disagreed with him and told him that I know plenty of really nice black people. He became silent after I said this, but shortly after some more students got on the bus, he began discussing the presidential election (yes a 2nd grader). His summation of the whole situation was this: “Well John McCain was in the military, and Barack Obama played basketball. Thats all he did, play basketball.”

I don’t know if any 2nd graders read this obscure blog, but…
